Psychiatric Care Second to None
Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people seek psychiatric care, and one of the most treatable conditions in outpatient psychiatry. Getting to the right treatment, however, requires understanding what is actually driving your symptoms, not just matching a label to a medication.
Psych Dimensions provides anxiety evaluation and treatment in San Marcos at 300 S CM Allen Pkwy, Suite 400, San Marcos, TX 78666. We have been providing psychiatric care in Central Texas since 2015. Many people live with anxiety for years before seeking help, often because what they are experiencing does not match their idea of what anxiety looks like. For a lot of patients, anxiety feels less like fear and more like a constant low-level interference with daily life.
Some of the ways anxiety presents for patients who come to us in San Marcos:
These are not character traits. They are clinical symptoms, and they respond to treatment. A psychiatric evaluation is the right starting point for understanding what is driving them.
Persistent, excessive worry occurring across multiple areas of life on most days. People with GAD often describe a mind that will not slow down regardless of how much they try to reason with it.
Recurring sudden episodes of intense fear with physical symptoms including chest tightness, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and dizziness. Many patients develop significant fear between episodes about when the next one will occur.
Marked fear of situations where a person may be observed, evaluated, or embarrassed. Goes well beyond shyness and causes real impairment in work, academic, and social settings.
Persistent preoccupation with having or developing a serious illness, often continuing despite normal test results or reassurance from medical providers.
Anxiety that develops in response to a significant life stressor such as a major transition, relationship change, academic pressure, or health diagnosis. Common among students navigating the demands of university life and adults managing significant life changes.
Every new patient at Psych Dimensions starts with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. We review your symptoms, how long they have been present, what makes them better or worse, and how they are affecting your ability to function. We also look at whether other conditions such as depression or ADHD are part of the picture, since anxiety frequently presents alongside other diagnoses.
Based on what the evaluation shows, we develop a treatment plan specific to you. That might mean medication, counseling, lifestyle considerations, or a combination. The recommendation is based on your specific presentation, not a standard protocol applied regardless of circumstances.
Anxiety treatment is not a single appointment. We monitor how your plan is working, make adjustments when needed, and continue to support you as your situation changes over time.
When medication is the right fit, we manage it carefully. That means selecting the appropriate medication class for your specific anxiety presentation, starting at a sensible dose, explaining what to expect, and monitoring your response at follow-up appointments. Commonly used medication classes for anxiety include SSRIs, SNRIs, and buspirone, among others. If the first medication does not produce the results it should, we adjust the plan.
Medication is not the automatic starting point for every patient. For mild to moderate anxiety, counseling alone often produces strong outcomes. For more severe or persistent anxiety, medication is frequently an important part of the plan. The evaluation determines which approach makes sense for your situation.
Medication is not the automatic starting point for every patient. For mild to moderate anxiety presentations, therapy alone often produces strong outcomes. For more severe or treatment-resistant anxiety, medication is frequently an important part of the plan.
We partner with Cedar Creek Associates, located in the same building, to provide in-person counseling for patients who need therapeutic support alongside psychiatric care. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has the strongest research support of any therapeutic approach for anxiety disorders, and it is among the approaches available through Cedar Creek’s counselors. Telehealth therapy is also available through Psych Dimensions directly for patients who prefer remote sessions.
Having psychiatry and counseling available in the same building means your prescriber and your counselor are connected. You are not managing two separate provider relationships or hoping that information is being shared between them.
We treat adults and adolescents ages 16 and up. San Marcos is home to Texas State University, and anxiety is one of the most common concerns we see among students navigating academic pressure, social transitions, and the demands of being away from home for the first time. We also serve long-term San Marcos residents and families dealing with anxiety across all stages of life.
Anxiety rarely presents in isolation. At Psych Dimensions, our initial evaluation looks at the full clinical picture, including whether any of the following are contributing to or occurring alongside your anxiety:
Treating anxiety without addressing co-occurring conditions often produces incomplete results. We evaluate for all of them during the initial assessment and build a plan that addresses the full picture.

No. Whether medication is part of the plan depends on the severity of your anxiety, your history, and your preferences. For mild to moderate anxiety, counseling alone is often the right starting point. For more severe or persistent anxiety, medication is frequently an important part of the plan. The evaluation determines which approach fits your situation.
Commonly used medication classes for anxiety disorders include SSRIs, SNRIs, and buspirone. The appropriate medication depends on your specific anxiety presentation, your history with prior medications, and other factors identified during the evaluation.
