What Medication Management Actually Is

Medication management is not a one-time prescription. It is an ongoing clinical process that includes evaluation before prescribing, careful medication selection and dosing, monitoring how a medication is working, adjusting when it is not, managing side effects, and reassessing the plan over time as your needs change.

At Psych Dimensions, this process begins with understanding the full picture of what you are dealing with before any medication is introduced. Your history, your lifestyle, and whether other interventions should be part of the plan alongside or instead of medication all factor into what we recommend. The goal is finding what actually works for your specific situation, not applying a standard protocol to every patient who comes through the door.

How We Approach Prescribing

A thorough evaluation before any prescribing is not optional at this practice. It is what makes the subsequent treatment plan clinically sound.

Your first appointment is a comprehensive evaluation, not a prescription appointment. It typically runs 60 to 90 minutes and covers your current symptoms, psychiatric and medical history, prior medications and how you responded to them, relevant lifestyle factors, and what is going on in your life right now. What comes out of that evaluation determines whether medication is appropriate, what type, and at what dose.

For some patients, medication is the most effective and appropriate intervention. For others, the most meaningful progress comes from lifestyle changes, therapy, or integrative approaches, with medication playing a supporting role or not featuring at all. We do not have a predetermined answer before we meet you.

What to Expect Throughout Your Care

Initial evaluation.

Every new patient begins with a comprehensive evaluation. This is the foundation of everything that follows and typically takes 60 to 90 minutes.

Prescribing when appropriate.

If medication is clinically appropriate, we discuss the options with you, explain what to expect, and start at a dose that makes sense for your situation. We do not push medication when it is not the right fit.

Ongoing follow-up.

Medication management requires follow-up. We monitor how you are responding, address side effects, adjust doses when needed, and reassess whether the current plan is still the right one. Initial follow-ups typically occur two to four weeks after a new medication is started. Once stable, appointments may shift to monthly or quarterly depending on your situation. Patients are not seen once and left to manage on their own.

Coordinated care.

If counseling or therapy is part of your plan, we partner with Cedar Creek Associates, located in the same building, to provide in-person counseling. Telehealth therapy is also available through Psych Dimensions directly. Your psychiatric care and your counseling stay connected rather than fragmented across two separate practices.

Conditions We Provide Medication Management For

Depression.

Depression affects energy, concentration, sleep, appetite, and daily functioning. When medication is part of the plan, we select carefully based on your specific presentation and history, monitor your response closely, and adjust when needed. Lifestyle factors including sleep, nutrition, and physical activity are also part of the conversation.

Anxiety disorders.

This includes generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, and anxiety that accompanies other conditions. Medication can reduce the intensity and frequency of symptoms for many patients. We look at what is contributing before making any recommendations.

Bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder requires careful, long-term medication management. Mood stabilization is the primary goal, and finding the right approach takes time and close monitoring. We also pay attention to sleep consistency, stress load, and daily structure, which are known to affect mood stability alongside medication.

ADHD.

Medication is one of the most well-researched interventions for ADHD in adults and adolescents. We conduct a thorough evaluation before prescribing and monitor your response over time. Behavioral strategies and lifestyle factors that support the effectiveness of medication are also part of the plan.

PTSD.

Medication can reduce the severity of PTSD symptoms and create space for deeper therapeutic work. We evaluate the full clinical picture before making recommendations and pay close attention to sleep, stress regulation, and physical health alongside prescribing.

OCD.

Medication is a first-line treatment for OCD and is most effective when combined with therapy. We work to find a medication approach that reduces symptom frequency and intensity and coordinate with Cedar Creek Associates for counseling where appropriate.

Schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.

Medication is a cornerstone of treatment for schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. We provide careful, ongoing management focused on maintaining stability and minimizing side effects, while also considering the broader lifestyle factors that affect daily functioning.

Insomnia and sleep disorders.

When sleep problems are connected to an underlying psychiatric condition, addressing that condition can produce meaningful improvement. We evaluate sleep hygiene and behavioral patterns first. Medication is rarely the starting point when lifestyle and behavioral factors have not yet been fully addressed.

Additional conditions.

We also treat substance use disorder, adjustment disorder, and other conditions not listed here. If you do not see your condition listed, contact the office and we will let you know whether we are the right fit.
